Feuds have been a part of rap since the beginning like the classic rivalry between Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur in the 1990s. Large scale rap feuds seemed to calm down for many years but have come back with a vengeance.
Drake and Pusha-T made headlines earlier this year when they traded diss tracks back and forth. Pusha-T released a song where he accuses Drake of using a ghost writer and Drake responded to Pusha-T by saying that his career was failing. However, Pusha-T took the fight to a new level with a harsh track, “The Story of Adidon” in which he alleges Drake had a secret son with a porn star. Pusha-T also took shots at Drake’s parents and a frequent collaborator, Noah Shebib.
This was the start to a year of feuds. Eminem has made headlines with his latest album, Kamikaze, in which he calls out many rappers including Die Antwoord, Lupe Fiasco, 6ix9ine, and Machine Gun Kelly. Many responded including Kelly who released a new track, “Rap Devil” where he said, “You’re not getting better with time/ It’s fine, Eminem, put down the pen.”
Women in the rap industry also have been feuding. Cardi B and Nicki Minaj got into a fight at Harper Bazaar Icons party and Cardi B threw a shoe at Minaj. Cardi B claims Minaj insulted her parenting skills but Minaj has said that it was a lie.
Are rap feuds going to reach the deadly heights they did in past decades? Looking at the escalating fights it seems like a possibility.
